WHAT IS BREATHE 2025?
Breathe 2025 is about ensuring that our children grow up in a place of clean air and bright futures.
Breathe 2025 is about recognising that we have the ability to create a legacy we can all be proud of. It is about realising that our actions do make a difference, and understanding that if a young person does not start smoking by age 26, they almost certainly never will.
That’s why we’re calling on everyone to pledge an action, big or small, on this site, and to be a part of our vision to ‘Inspire a Smokefree Generation’.
Tobacco is a unique product. It is the only consumable that, when used in the intended way, kills half of its regular users.
For every death caused by smoking, approximately 20 smokers are suffering from a smoking related disease.
This makes smoking the single greatest cause of early deaths and disease in the UK.
And it begins with our children.
207,000 children in the UK start smoking each year.
Every day, in Yorkshire and the Humber alone, 51 children aged 11-15 years, take up smoking.
Enough is enough.
More than 7 million UK smokers started smoking before the age of 18. Half of all long-term smokers will be killed by their lethal addiction. 100,000 people die of a smoking-related illness every year in the UK.
Two-thirds of smokers report that they took up smoking before the age of 18 and over 80% before the age of 20.
Two-fifths (40%) had started smoking regularly before the age of 16.
Among children who try smoking it is estimated that between one third and one half are likely to become regular smokers within two to three years.
In a recent poll, most of us (85 per cent) want Government action to reduce the number of children who smoke.
The Breathe 2025 vision is simply this: to see the next generation of children born and raised in a place of clean air, free from tobacco, where smoking is unusual.
Together we can inspire a smokefree generation.
